THE SEVEN KEY ELEMENTS OF SMART SCHOOLS
SmART Schools seek to engage all students, to ignite their creativity and enhance learning, innovation, and achievement. More specifically, the program has seven key elements to improve student achievement and social success:
Infuse the arts (dance, music, theatre, and visual arts) into every classroom, every day.
Design and implement rigorous standards-based, arts-infused curriculum, instruction and performance assessments.
Develop culturally responsive practices that sharpen “cultural dispositions” necessary for teaching and honoring students from all cultural backgrounds.
Promote “global competencies” to awaken every student’s capacity to investigate the world, appreciate diverse perspectives, communicate their ideas, and take appropriate action.
Foster a personalized and inclusive school culture.
Cultivate arts-centered “professional learning communities” supported by Collaborative Leadership Teams, SmART Coaches, ongoing professional development, and on-site support.
Build and support strong partnerships among family, school, community, arts and cultural organizations, and institutions of higher education; and create opportunities for learning through service to the community.
